Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen and British School at Rome.
Member of the Royal Scottish Academy; The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Honorary Doctor of Letters University of St. Andrews 2000; MBE 2006;
Emeritus Professor University of Dundee 2007; Honorary Fellow of the University of the Highlands 2008; Honorary Doctor of Letters University of Aberdeen 2009; Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 2010. Hon. Fellow Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland 2023
Awards include- Scottish Arts Council Award; Scottish Education Trust Bursary; Civic Trust Award; National Heritage Award; Spirit of Scotland Award; Creative Scotland Award. Saltire Society Award.
