Shona Kinloch

Biography

Born in 1962, I studied at The Glasgow School of Art from 1980-85 B.A.(Hons) Fine Art (Sculpture), Post Graduate Diploma (Sculpture).

In 1988, my profile was raised when I made “Seven Glasgow Dogs” for the Glasgow Garden Festival, which resulted in a long list of public and private commissions.

I have public works in Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Ayr, Irvine, Eskbank, Hamilton, Kilmarnock and East Kilbride, in England (Loughborough, Morecambe and Tattenhall) and further afield (on five Royal Caribbean criuse liners).

I have been awarded several awards including the Saltire Society Art in Architecture Award (1992) and the Association of Landscape Industries Sculpture Award (1999).

I was elected an R.G.I. at the Royal Glasgow Institute of The Fine Arts in 2009.

Artist's Statement

I have been making sculpture for over 40 years.  I model my work in clay and then have it cast in bronze at the Powderhall Bronze foundry.  My work is figurative in a simplified way and as much as I take my work very seriously a wee touch of humour usually manages to sneak into it.  My sculptures come in a variety of different sizes (from a couple of centimetres high to over 2 metres high) because a small work can be monumental too.  A lot of my work has been made to go outdoors: bronze is such a lovely, tactile material but it is also extremely durable so is the ideal medium to withstand the elements. I have created over 30 public works which have all been sight specific which makes me think about the reasons how, where, what and why the sculpture should be there.  Subject matter has included chunky men and women and a lot of animals and birds (cats, dogs, squirrels, hares, fish, horses, pigs, sheep, swans, crows, cormorants, pigeons, seagulls, chickens, eagles and peacocks) observed, reimaged and made into sculpture. The sculptures mostly come without plinths (or integrated plinths) so that, hopefully they meld into the site and become part of their environment.  People-watching, bird watching and just watching the world go by is my inspiration.  I also dabble in a wee bit of lino cut print making for the sheer simplicity of it.
