About the Artist


John Inglis

Born Glasgow, Scotland, 1953

After attending Hillhead High School in his native Glasgow, John Inglis studied at Gray’s School of Art, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, from 1970 to 1974 and subsequently obtained a post-graduate diploma in 1975. Among the awards won while at Art School were two Travelling Scholarships to Italy in 1976. In addition, he received the Scottish Arts Council Award in 1980 and the Scottish Arts Council Printmaking Bursary in 1982, and the Bet Low scholarship to Orkney in 2013.

His prizes include the Aberdeen Artists Society Major Award 2020, the Bessie Scott prize from the Paisley Art Institute 2004, May Marshall Brown Award, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (1994 & 2000), the EIS Award (1984), RSA Meyer Oppenheim Prize (1982) and the RSA Keith Prize (1975).

He is represented in public and private collections in the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Japan, Mexico, France and Australia.

Elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1984, Inglis was RSW President from 2005 until 2016. Since 2009, he is a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and an Artist Member of the Paisley Art Institute.

John Inglis was made an Honorary Member of the Australian Watercolour Institute in 2010 in recognition of his services to watercolour internationally.
