Donald Moodie RSA, PSSA (1892-1963)

Born Edinburgh. Painter in oil and watercolour; landscapes, still life, portraiture and murals. Educated at George Heriot’s and ECA. Awarded postgraduate scholarship in 1914. In 1919 appointed to staff of ECA. Sketched extensively in Brittany, later in the Borders and the West Highlands. A skilled watercolourist, sympathetic to the ideas of the progressive students under his care who included Gillies, Maxwell & MacTaggart. Elected ARSA 1943, RSA 1952, President of SSA 1937-42. In 1959 became Secretary, RSA remaining in office until shortly before his death in 1963. Exhibited extensively RSA (100+), GI (34) & AAS.
