John Cunningham RGI D.Litt (1926-1998)

Born in Lanarkshire. Painter in oil: landscapes, portraits, still life and figurative works. Studied at Glasgow School of Art 1946-50 and taught there from 1967 until retirement in 1985. He painted extensively in France, Spain and Italy but the main body of his work focused on the landscapes and seascapes of the West Coast of Scotland. His work is typified with bold, confident brush strokes and vibrant use of colour. Elected to the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) in 1980 and in 1990 he was given an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Strathclyde. He exhibited regularly at the RSA, RGI and at many private Galleries in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and elsewhere. His work is represented in the Glasgow Art Gallery and is also held in numerous public, corporate and private collections worldwide.
